They seem really pointless nowadays...can anyone tell me any functions they actually perform or is it all a publicity thing?

Three words: Publicity, publicity, publicity! And a total waste of money. However, this IS the main way for the party to raise millions of dollars from their supporters (Trans-national corporations).

Technically the delegates nominate the president and VP, but you;re right since it's all decided way before that they are kind of pointless now, considering the millions of $ they spend on them

In terms of the nominating process they are pretty pointless but I suppose they serve as a rallying call to the faithful (and a call to turn to another channel for the rest of us)

super remark! Is it quite a democracy in a rustic the place Presidential all applicants are prosperous (top a million% of the inhabitants) and could desire to improve (from different millionaires) a minimum of 50 million funds to even evaluate working? i don't know, yet that would not define democracy to me.
