Walnuts are a tough nut to crack. With regular nut cracking tools I don't think you can. You'd probably need something like a Dremmel to cut it out.

It requires a triangle nut cracker and strong enough hands to be able to control the amount of pressure applied to the walnut. If your hands are weaker you can only crush the nut without anyway to stop yourself from carrying through the momentum of the cracking. If you have excess strength you can control how much your hand will close. Let daddy do it.

English walnuts can be easily cracked with a nut cracker, very carefully however. Black walnuts have extremely tough shells, and can only be cracked with a hammer. Tap them several times with moderate force to weaken the shell, until it begins to crack. Then tap them more gently to break them open. They are virtually impossible to extract whole without breaking.

The easiest way is to put the nut on a piece of kitchen towel then on a hard surface (like a paving slab) then tap it gently around the join with a hammer.
