Do you have power to the coil? I would check that first

mid to late 80's fords had what is called thick film ignition (TFI) there is a module, in earlier years it was right on the side of the distributor (the part the wires plug into) in later years ford moved it to a heat sink on the driver's fender near the firewall, in either case it looks like a maybe 7/16" by maybe 2 1/2" gray box with... if i remember 4 wires plugged into it and held to either the distributor or the heat sink with 2 5.5mm screws. if it is on the distributor as you remove it there will be 3 prongs sticking out of it into the distributor so you have to pull down then out, if its in the heat sink there are no prongs, in either case when you put on the new one make sure you smear the metal side of it with the special heat sink grease it comes with or you will blow the new one too, if i remember right they cost about $75
