He may have aggravated a hernia, which is a very serious medical condition---you will know in a few days because the pain will not subside or go away. On the other hand, if he pulled a muscle, he will need to be still and do nothing for a few days and it should start to feel better.

If he can tolerate it, have him take some Motrin, it is an anti-inflammatory, it will help with the pain and swelling.

You can take up to 1,200 mg of ibuprofen in a single dose if pain is a problem. If you take that much wait about 8 hours before taking another (smaller) dose. You can take up to 2 grams of Tylenol at a time. (If your husband has liver problems-- which it doesn't sound like he does, then of course he can't take those big doses.)

An ice pack and alternatively hot water bottle should help a lot. After the first day or so, very gentle massage should also help. (No hard pressure.)

If there is a lot of swelling, or a discolored area, however, he MUST see a doctor.

Good luck!

Ice. Motrin and very hot baths.

Your husband might have sustained a hernia. If that goes untreated, the muscles might "strangle" the intestines that are now poking thru the muscle wall (that's what a hernia is), causing the intestines to die. At that point, it goes from an outpatient surgery to a major surgery, perhaps a colostomy (poop bag on the outside of the body), and even death.

BTW, I understand the male / hate docs thing.

If bearable you should ice the area (i don't know if that tolerable due to the sensitivity of the area) for the first 48 hours after the injury. After the first two days after the injury try to take hot baths to relax the pain away. Most importantly you must rest, don't try to move if you don't need to. If the pain doesn't go away after a week then you should see a doctor. Good luck!

As an RN...Rule of thumb...
Ice is nice, (first 48 hrs.)
Heat is neat, (after 48 hrs.)

Try an ice pack...For that area, a frozen bag of veggies IE: corn, peas. Frozen veggies are actually better than an ice pack...As the veggies bend, move, etc.!!!

What we recommended for men after vasectomy!!!

If pain persists, DR.!!!

He needs to rest if it is a muscle injury. However, as lifting injuries often do, if the pain is in his testicles inspect them for bulges or swelling (it could be slightly romantic). It could be a hernia which you do need to get worked on.

Get to the hospital; your husband probably has a hernia. It is very dangerous if left untreated.
