i am creating a raised bed garden, actually two, and am looking for suggestions of plants/flowers that would compliment the 3 hyrdrenga flower bushes that i already bought. they are the type with the burgendy flowers. i am looking for something that will flower earlier, and still not overpower the hydrengas, i live in upstate ny. thank you

Hydrangeas are great with woodland plants- Solomon's Seal, Trillium, trout lilies, Arum, snowdrops, Muscari, bleeding heart (Dicentra), crocus. Many spring bulbs will do nicely in the shade of deciduous trees along with hydrangea- they flower and finish before the trees leaf out. Foliage plants are good, too- big bold blue hostas like Krossa Regal make a nice leaf contrast. On the other end of the spectrum, Christmas ferns or Lady Ferns (Athyrium) make a nice texture contrast.
