Ever since grade nine, I have known that I want to be an environmental engineer because I enjoy/am good at science and applying it to the real world and I am interested in the environment. Well, my biology teacher this year thinks that that is beneath me and that my brain could be put to better use. I never thought that I even had the brains to have a Ph.D or whatever, but I guess I do and I should really be putting them to use. What would be a cutting edge career involving high education that would really help the world?

Biochemistry
study the chemical composition of living things. They analyze the complex chemical combinations and reactions involved in metabolism, reproduction, growth, and heredity. Biochemists explore the chemistry and biology of occurrences in the tiny realm inside cells. They dissect the innermost secrets of the cell and develop new ways to detect and attack disease. Biochemists study the development of illness, and search for ways to improve the Earth. They use these techniques to trace the path of evolution, warn people when their children might inherit a disease, and identify criminals. Biochemists and molecular biologists do most of their work in the field of biotechnology, which involves understanding the complex chemistry of life.

Wildlife Biologist
study the origins, behavior, diseases, genetics, and life processes of animals in the wild. They study reptiles, amphibians, birds, invertebrates, and mammals; and their natural habitat and interactions with their environment. Wildlife biologists organize and carry out studies to analyze and monitor ongoing wildlife and habitat projects. They conduct field research and analyze, interpret, and report their findings. When they report their findings they also make recommendations on management systems, and planning for wildlife population and habitat. Wildlife biologists collect and analyze biological data to determine the environmental effects of present and potential use of land and water areas. They inventory plant and wildlife communities and carry out environmental impact assessments. They also estimate wildlife populations for management programs.

Toxicology
research or study the effects of toxic substances and materials on physiological functions of humans, animals, and plants, for consumer protection and industrial safety programs. They design and conduct studies to determine physiological effects of various substances and materials on laboratory animals, plants, and human tissue. Toxicologists interpret the results of studies in terms of toxicological properties of substances and materials, and the hazards associated with their misuse.

Career

A medical or pharmaceutical researcher. You would most likely get a combined MD/PhD (lots, and lots, and lots of years in school), and then would go on to work to figure out what causes diseases and how to treat and cure them. You will make a lot of money, but most of it will go to pay off your student loans, and you can really help humanity.

However, if you want to be an environmental engineer, go for it. It is a great career. Teachers have a tendency to push their own agenda instead of thinking about what is best for you. PhD are far from the smartest people, they are just the hardest working. So if you want to work your butt off, go for it. It'll be worth it when everyone calls you Dr. So and So.

Good Luck!

If you want to use your brains then try becoming a doctor. When you enter this field you can never have enough knowledge. there is no ending to your study. my mom is a doctor and she is still studying.
But I think that you should listen to your heart. you wont like the job if you are not interested in it. It would be like living with some stranger when you have an option.

you can do one thing. be an environmental engineer and with that you can become a doctor or anything you like.
