Being a mature student would still require that you should demonstrate academic ability, age is not enough alone. One way you can do this is by taking an access course which is usually 1 year full time. Alternatively go to college and do a National Diploma (equivalent to 3 A-levels) 2 years full time. Finally, if you have a number of years in industry (typically 10 or more) you may gain discretionary entry to a degree course, but it is still likely that you will need to do an access course first. From next year you can be paid to take a full time National Diploma at a FE college up to age 25. You will get housing benefit and a living allowance. Its the way to go from 2007 I think.

A good thing to do would be to sign up for an Open University course. They are excellent at providing for people in your position. You would be able to study at home and see how it goes. If you cope with the first part of the course OK you could then transfer to a conventional university course if you wanted to. It is a low risk option.

My best advice would be to phone the head-lecturer of the course that you want to apply for. have a word and ask the course requirements, tell them your situation and ask if you could be considered for enrollment with the qualifications you have - if not ask what they would be willing to accept. what they say in person over the phone is often different to what ucas says the course requires.

You could try an access course. Your local college will probably be able to help you.
