Carrot and Sticks.
Punishments are made in order to deter individuals from performing actions infavorable or disliked by the punishor.
If you would still lie, i guess that the punishment set out is not severe enough to do its job.
You really have to balance between the costs and benefits of your actions. The risks and chances of being caught out as a liar.
Evidence against you and so forth.
It also depends on your moral constitution, whether you can withstand the 'guilt'.
Remember, its not a lie if everyone else thinks it to be the truth. ; )

Depends i guess..
In my classroom i have the ethos that telling the truth is better than lying so even if someone has done something REALLY bad i ask them to tell me the truth because if i find out they have lied about it they get into more trouble.
It took some getting used to but they are getting pretty honest now and will admit if they have done somethng wrong. Then we sit and talk it over and the punishment is much less than if they'd lied.
But you have to know the person you are telling the lie to - and know what will be better for you in the long run!

No, but people do it. Taking responsibility for one's actions is what one should do...so accepting punishment is part of that...besides, "what comes around, goes around" so lying might save you from immediate punishment, but what comes from it down the road may be even worse...
If you want to avoid punishment, then don't do or say things that will get you into trouble...then you won't have to think about whether or not to lie...

That is the wors kind of lie, if you did do it and lie about it and get away with it someone else will be blamed for it.
If you lie about who did it because you don't want to get your friend in trouble it is called false witness and it is a sin to bear fall witness against someone, why do you think you have to swear on the bible in court.
I think you already knew the answer to this, another way of looking at it is that how many lies are you willing to tell, because you will have to lie again and again to cover up this lie. Eventually you will forget what you originally said and will get caught in your lie and no one will trust that you are a truthful person again. LOL.

No, the right thing to do is tell the truth, take the punishment and learn from the mistake and make your best effort not to repeat the incident. Good luck and God bless

it is never okay to tell a lie. Right is right and a wrong will never make a right. Take your punishment.

Well, its not hurting anyone but you. I've done it too many times and by now I've learned that you get in LESS trouble if you say the truth the first time it's asked for.

Take it from someone who got into trouble many many times as a kid. It's always better to tell the truth.
