According to the Bible, it was because the residents wanted to have sexual relations with two visiting angels(messengers of god), and even turned down the women who were offered to the villagers as substitutes.


Addendum: I was a pollster with a marketing degree and an MBA in International Finance long before I was ordained. This appears to be a poll of the participants perceptions.

It depends on your school of thought. I personally don't believe that God punishes..We do enough of that for ourselves!
