I spent three days in Venice with my family in July and it wasn't enough! We got to see Doge's Palace, Rialto Bridge, explore the San Marco area, take a gondola ride, check out the shops and the Canale Grande and roam the mazes of alleys, but would have liked more time to visit some of the lagoon islands, (particularly Murano (glass)and Burano (lace); tour the St. Marks Basillica, and roam around some more. Venice is beautiful, the people are friendly and the food is delicious! Loved eating at the restaurants on the Grand Canal as the sun was setting. Six days may be a bit much, but I would not go for less than four! And, by the way, you will be close enough to Florence to take a two hour train ride there from Santa Lucia station! Buon viaggio!!! (have a nice trip)

6 days might be too much. Venice is a beautiful city but at any given time there are many more tourists than residents so it has the feel of a giant amusement park or a shopping mall. Going to Florence for a few days would be a good ideal.

I was bored with Venice after 2 days. Beautiful, no doubt, but how many glass shops can you visit in a day?
Florence however... Been there three times, can't wait to go back.

Yes. It is a smaller city than you might think. You can cover most of it in 2 days and use a third to enjoy the feel of the city. But then move on to Florence or Rome which are only 2-4 hours away by train.

If you wanted some change you could go to Florence but Venice is a beautiful city with a ton of stuff to do.

Florence is less than a half-day train ride--you could easily come and go back within 2-3 days.

Near Venice there is Padova, where you can find the largest square in Europe, "Prato della Valle"! You can't miss it!
Ciao! :-)
