I've heard people say if you hold your nose and bite into an onion, it tastes a lot like an apple. I tried it and it is surprising how close they are, but you can still tell it's an onion. Just goes to show you how much of taste is actually smell.

No they certainly don't taste the same. Eat each one raw, you'll soon find out, apart from texture and smell, onion's are spicy, apples sweet (sugary) and potatoes bland. Cook them and they take on yet more differences. They may have the same/similar chemical structures (not that I know anything about that) but that doesn't mean they taste the same.

the position did you listen about that? I advise the apple is a fruit, the onion and potato are vegetable's. Plus all of them have diverse textures. i wager they are all similar in structure?

i do not know the answer to your question but i did an experiment with 6th graders involving sense of smell and taste. take a tomato and put sugar on it, plug your nose and eat it and it will taste just like a strawberry.
