OMG, where do these people get their information from?
Ferrets do not drain the blood out of anything, especially not babies and please, please, do NOT throw your ferret in a bathtub. Not all ferrets like water and they CAN drown.
Your best answer so far is the one about "Ferrets for Dummies". It's a good book full of useful information.
Here's a few facts:
-Ferrets are expensive: expensive to get, expensive to keep. You are looking at a lot of special things it will need. Ferrets will also need frequent vet care. Yearly in the beginning, for shots and more often later for health problems that frequently occur. So if you get one, make sure you start a vet fund for it. A good average to have in it is about $500.00 per ferret over time.
-Ferrets smell. Most pet store ferrets are neutered/spayed and descented, meaning, it will have had it's ANAL gland removed. The anal gland is a gland that sprays a smelly deterrent when the animal is scared, injured or startled, much like a skunk, only not quite as smelly. Even when they have been descented, ferrets will always smell like ferrets, but you can minimize the odor by keeping them and their bedding and litter pans clean at all times.
Bathing them too often will increase the odor however, because the odor stems from oil glands all over the body, mostly in the neck area and stripping these oils will make the ferret itchy. The body then goes into overdrive to replace those oils, resulting in a smellier ferret even sooner.
Feeding foods low in fish proteins also controls the smell somewhat, but ferrets are ferrets and are not supposed to smell like roses.
- Ferrets are time consuming and labor intensive. You will have to train them to use the litter pan, you will have to scoop said pan at least twice a day. Their cage needs washed down once a week and all bedding needs changed at that point. Ferrets need fresh water and food available 24/7. They have a short digestive system and cannot go very long without food. Their blood sugar will drop and they can have seizures and even die. Ferrets can be caged but need at least 4 hours playtime outside the cage. You cannot just turn them lose either, they need you to interact and play with them. You have to FERRET PROOF your house, or at least the room you let them play in, to keep them from getting into trouble and/or hurt.
Though ferrets seem like the coolest pets out there, you must keep in mind that they will live 6 - 10 yrs, most of them closer to 8, but good care can extend that time quite a bit. Are you willing to care for this animal for the entire time of it's life?
- Ferrets are carnivores and need special foods. Not all ferret foods are good for them either, but some kitten foods are okay. Get information on that as well while you are checking things out. http://www.ohioferret.org/INFO/nutri.asp
Most of the information you will need can be found on Google.
- Ferrets are expensive in the pet stores, but there are many many ferrets sitting in shelters all over the country. So do your homework, read up on them, talk to people who actually own them, visit and handle ferrets a few times and really think things through. Then, and only then, adopt one or two from a shelter. Go to www.petfinder.com and type in your zip code. They are everywhere and if none are close enough contact Ferrets Across America. They can get one to you if need be.
Sorry I'm so long winded, but I really care about these little critters. They are fun to have around and worth all the work and preparation. I think they are wonderful pets in the right hands, just not for everyone.
Good luck to you.

I've owned one. You need a large cage about 3-4 ft. high for it's "home". The cage is equipped with ladders up and down the cage. They generally are "housebroken" to use the bottom of the cage. They will go to it as needed. This should contain wood shavings or a suitable absorbant material and cleaned often. They are pretty clean animals, They are very playful and fun pets.
You will need a canvas swing where they sleep and a few toys. They have a natural undesirable odor but this can be controlled by use of a harmless chemical in their water. All these are available at pet stores. They eat some veggies and commercial food is available in a pellet form. Food and fresh water must be available at all times. They tend to "graze".
If they ever get out of the house, say goodbye. they never return. Be careful if they are loose and you open the door. They're lightening fast.

Ferrits are in the weasle family. Its best to get them Sprayed before you bring them home. They also love water! Fill up the tub and throw them in. I found its best to by in pairs. They tend to be lonley. They need Things to climb on in thier cage. If you go to petsmart they have some really good books and experts. Good Luck With It! Farrits Make Awesome Pets.

Over 90% of ferrets get cancer (Esp. insulinomas); a lot of the time the owners don't even know it. They are nice, but can be "bitey" at times. Do not feed them complex carbohydrates, or plant protein (ie Soy) - their bodies can't digest that well. They can contract canine distemper virus, which can be fatal more times than not (that's why they should be vaccinated annually).
Also, they do smell (related to skunk family), even if they have been descented. Mine was easy to litterbox train (less than a day). Good luck!

They have got to have fresh water and food daily. A ferrets stomach is the size of a quarter, if they miss one day of food they will starve. Best to keep food in there bowl 24/7.
They also smell. Half to bath them frequently.
also if they can fit there head in a hole they can fit there whole body through it. Real easy for them to escape through small holes. Dogs are an enemy for ferrets.

Ferrets are a weasel. They will drain the blood out of chickens, cats, BABY'S. That's why they are ill-legal in California.
