My grandparents lived kitty-corner to each other (okay...catty-corner for you Southern folks) and when my Mother was in her teens she would baby-sit my Uncles. She met my father when he came home on furlough from the Marines...and apparently it was love at first site...and they were married 3 years later.
The coolest thing about their early romance was that during their courtship they were separated a great deal and could only write letters...and there are hundreds of them, which I now have possession of and read from time to time...a very simple but heart warming tale.

Well, this was the early 1960s... my mom was attending some leftist rally that my dad happened to be giving a speech at. She was struck by both his passion and compassion and they ended up talking after the rally. I guess things just went from there. The funny thing is... they've always struck me as vastly incompatible people in many ways. My dad is quite a compelling speaker though, and they're both very intelligent, so it makes sense to me that they would bond ideologically, if not in other ways.

My dad had immigrated to the USA in 1925, Chicago to be exact. He went home on a visit in '27 where he met my mom who was standing behind the counter at her parent's Gasthaus. My mom was 17. He liked what he saw, stuck around, proposed and they were going to go back to the USA together. But the family business went nearly bankrupt and my mom decided to stay home and help. She took over the business with the help of my dad. It wasn't until 1952 that they left Germany and came to Canada.

I think he paid with a check. Wait, that is not what I meant. He was in the navy(Where are the village people when we need them), and she was working as a clerk in a store in Seattle, Washington, as opposed to Seattle, Arkansas. Chance meetings. Where would we be without them? I met my wife in a night club at the end of a bachelorette(may have misspelled) party. Not my party, hers. Life is full of odd turns and quirks. That little restaurant you dash into during a rainstorm(liked that question) may lead you to a chance meeting that could change your life forever.

My parents met in Victoria, BC, later to find out that they lived about an hour away from each other in Washington State. They spent their honeymoon back in Victoria, and many anniversaries afterwards.

He had finished his national service time with the KOSB's (Kings Own Scottish Borderers) and moved to London where he took work as a bricklayer, though by trade he was a stone mason.
The chap he got work with took him home one time, and there he met his daughter - my mother.
Done deal :o)
