Lactation is the process of producing breast milk and is not painful but the act of breastfeeding can be uncomfortable if the nipples become sore or raw. If this happens use a nipple shield.

Breastfeeding can be very painful in the beginning. Your nipples can become very raw and sore. I gave up with my first because it hurt so bad, with my second, I got some advice and training and never had any trouble after the first couple of days.
Nursing your child is beneficial to their health and also forms a very strong mother/child bond. Good luck.

Only the first few times. Then it becomes more painful not to breastfeed as your breasts become used to the process. It's a wonderful experience. Relax. It's natural. Enjoy it. It doesn't last all that long. The baby grows up so fast!

It can be in the beginning, which is why alot of women decide to give it up! If you just hang in there, your body will automatically adjust, and you will no longer have to deal with the soreness and engorging. It is well worth it if you consider the benefits to the baby! If you want your child to have a strong immune system that will last into adulthood, stay with it! Plus, it gives you a closeness that cannot be duplicated with any bottle of formula!
