The film i believe was in the late 60s or early 70s and was basically a supernatural or horror film about a tall, pale skinned man who drove a black hearse and seemed to control flying metallic orbs that had blades in them. they flew through the air and kinda stuck into his victims head. From what i can gather there were 4 films in the series and it also had two teenagers who drove around trying to track him to kill him

It was Phantasm.
They made 4 films in total, if you go to HMV you can buy the whole set in packaging shaped like the killer orb !

phantasm. funniest film i eva saw at the cinema. when the orb stuck in that fellas head the first time someone at the back shouted ooonnneee hundred and eeeightyyy!!! pure genius

Yep the guy is right,it was indeed called Phantasm.
As I recall the strap line for the film was "If this one doesn't scare you-you're already dead!" Phew scary or what :-\
