yes, just get a early GM HEI distributor. You will also need a new distributor cap and rotor, a hei coil and don't forget the internal ground strap in the cap, a set of HEI plugwires and regap you sparkplugs to .45thousands.
You 74 GM has a resistor wire built into the harness from the factory which limits voltage to the orginal ignition coil to save the points. For best HEI operation, you need to remove this wire which goes to the ignition switch and replace it with regular none resistor wire.

Yes it is very simple.Go to a bone yard and get a "HEI" ignition setup out of any gm wreck that has a V8 engine in it and swap it, or you can buy any of the aftermarket replacement ignitions from companies like "accell,Mallory, msd" or there is this company named "pertronix" that sells a conversion kit that allows you to keep your stock distributor and have electronic ignition.Go to either www.jegs.com or www.summitracing.com and look at all the different ignition setups they sell. The selection for "small block Chevy's is massive.

Easy HEI is just a drop in and hook up tach and power wire. However I thought by 1972 Chevy had the big 7 inch diameter distributer already?
