I honestly don't think crime is any worse today. People did not have access to the amount of new we have nowadays. Everything seems to be reported in such a negative way. There is an awful lot of good stuff in the world. I think the children of today are far more aware than we ever were. They tend to be more tolerant of different races and background. Far more people are educated nowadays, which can only lead to more tolerance and less violence. There will always be a minority who think that life owes them something, but they are definitely only a small number of people.

The difference is that media has a greater capacity to display crime. 40 years ago we only had 3 channels in black and white. Crime is more in your face now. Think of how WW 2 would look on Television now compared to then.

Crime figures show that crime is falling. This is despite several major overhauls of the way that police record crimes which should have caused crime figures to rise. However, it is possible that many crimes go unreported. I am a little sceptical that this is the case as it is my experience that most victims of crime wish to claim on their insurance or claim compensation and therefore have to report crimes to the police.
