I work in the land surveying profession and we deal with realtors all the time. The reason most of them are disliked is because they lie, are clueless about their job (there's more to it than just showing homes!), and/or they think too highly of themselves.

Because people think the good ones are on billboards, but those are often the worst agents to have work for you. Billboard agents take lots of listings and spend a lot on advertising while the good agents do most of the work, so the public sees the billboard agent and thinks that they are typical of all agents.

Real estate advertising is geared towards getting more listings, not selling houses. It's the agents who work with buyers that sell houses, but the listing agent gets the glory. They say that the cream always rises to the top, but unfortunately, so does pond scum, and in many professions like real estate, the best publicized individual is probably not the one you want to deal with. Those are the ones who give agents a bad name.

People don't hate real estate agents. It's just another profession where you will find your good and your not so good. It's not like they are lawyers and out to get every dime out of your for the least amount of work possible. Real Estate Agents actually work their butts off and frequently for zip if the sale they worked so many hours on falls through...which happens a lot. If your having a bad experience with a Realtor, then by all means find another one who you feel you can trust. Keep looking, the good ones are all over the place. You can ask some local "tip" organizations such as "Le Tip" to make a recommendation. Good luck.

Many agents claim to be professional and my experience is that in most markets 7% of the agents are doing all the work and treating the business like a profession.

Its a business where its easy to puff with minimal standards or requirements.

There are many outstanding brokerages & agents worlwide.

This may be also true in other professions such as medicine and law.

I would agree with the others who have contributed that the consumer may not have a understanding of the complexities
of a real estate tranastion from start to finish.

Sadly many agents also do not understand or who are willing to raise the bar to higher levels of service, knowledge and changes in the market.

Well; I've been in the business since 1973 and I have found that any profession that is not understood gives rise to fear and therefore an adverse reaction to it. Especially if that profession generates substantial rewards to those who are professionals and ethical. Many also mistrust attorneys but that is only until they need them. The same for doctors. Usually an agent in our profession does not last very long before he is either jailed or penalized monetarily for any illegal or unethical practices. The unfortunate aspect of that is; while they did their wrongdoings that created an adverse affect on the rest of us professionals.
To summarize it's like when the first missionary encountered the cannibal. Can you imagine what was going through each of their minds?

i think its because they think that agents make alot of money for very little work.. They think it is really easy to sell a house or get a listing.. Yeah, but getting a buyer or a seller to choose you is not that easy!! No one realizes that part.. They just think omg 30k commission to sell a $500,000 house?? but they need to do the math.. we only get a 1/4 of that 30k!!
