theoretical scientists' brains travel faster than light, einstein & hawking are true examples. As all are aware of gravity, there could possibly 'something' which works in counter as a reaction. Remember Forces & motion and the 'great' old Newtonian theories! Theories of antigravity possibly explains countering, reducing or modifying the effects of gravity. If this is indeed true to achieve technology, it would be great step in space craft propulsion. No arrangement of ordinary matter can produce an anti-gravity effect. I think, some of the models could be related to Einstein's General Relativity theory. Gravity was no longer a force at all, but simply the consequence of the local slope of the universe in a direction the human eye cannot see: a fourth spatial dimension. Under this model, gravity in a universe containing only matter with positive mass is purely attractive. No arrangement of ordinary matter can produce an anti-gravity effect. Spacetime geometries corresponding to true anti-gravity in general relativity require negative mass.
Definitely, full explanation is beyond the frame of this 'cell'. Require more in-depth reading to understand another most 'highly imaginable, less practical' hypothesis

Hot objects rise up.
Let's take hydrogen for example .It is more energetic for it's particular mass and therefore moves away from the earth's surface (and therefore also against it's gravitational pull- antigravity) up to a certain limit or just escapes the atmostphere. This is my theory. So my idea is to take a sufficiently dense material or compact material like lead or a particle board (because it is compressed material made of seperate individual masses) and increase it's energy level non-thermally to a very high degree.Once it has passed beyond a certain energy value characteristic of it's mass/weight it will 'float' away. This method of working against gravity is what I call the 'float system' or 'buoyancy within a gravitational field'.The way the energy is given utilizes the principles of resonance in a manner similar to a squegging generator which can have two separate frequencies at the same time.It gives off a train of pulses where each pulse has it's own frequency.Think of Continuous wave current being chopped at regular intervals. So we have 2 frequencies- the first is the frequency at which the individual pulses oscillate and the second is the pulse rate .There is energy in oscillation,so we have more energy.[I think a Tesla coil can reach much higher power levels using this, just sayin')
I think this idea will positively work but I would like to hear some reasons why it would not ,and also some new additional information too.

we do no longer likely understand the way dark power works. the common theory is that vacant area has slightly of advantageous power, so as a results of fact the Universe expands, power is mandatory to make the extra area between the galaxies. with a view to furnish this further power, area could desire to enhance even swifter. distant factors of the Universe improve swifter than easy without or with dark power. this is no longer a difficulty and is no longer forbidden by way of particular Relativity, as a results of fact it does no longer deliver approximately causal paradox. there's a version of early inflation meaning that there is "ongoing eternal inflation", that constantly buds off Universes. those different Universes are unreachable by way of us. Ongoing eternal inflation does have some predictive power---it, which incorporate the anthropic concept could be utilized to make predictions approximately he residences of subatomic debris that have not yet been measured. If those debris easily are as anticipated, it lends credance to the thought.

The best option to know is to go into Starfleet Academy. Scotty will be teaching there soon.

Nobody knows how, that's why there are no antigravity devices.
