A hypothetical question is one that is answered only in terms of validity, not soundness. Thus the question is designed to make a number of assumptions, and be answered as if those assumption are true.

For example, a person may ask: Would you eat the moon, if it were made of barbeque spare ribs? This question presupposes that the moon is made of barbeque spare ribs, and asks only whether or not you would eat it. An objection based upon the composition of the moon is not an appropriate answer for the question, as that is given to be decided. Only answers such as yes, no or depends on what kind of sauce is available would be valid answers for this hypothetical question.

In law, a hypothetical question is one that comprises of an imaginary situation incorporating facts about the case. A witness can then be asked to answer or to give an opinion on the question and hypothetical situation.

Almost any question that begins with,"What if.........................", could be considered a hypothetical question. A hyp. question has no basis in fact-it is speculative, such as, "What would you do if you won a million dollars?"

Now, the answer to a hyp. question could be factual, as the answer could be predicated on experience, laws of physics or nature or fact. For example, if I asked you "What would happen if I threw a rock through your front window?", you could in fact state with certainty (nearly) that the window would break, even though the question is hypothetical.

I hope that helps!!!!

You need an hypothesis to compose a hypothetical question. Look it up in your English book.

O.K., let's say I were to ask you a question but not a real question because it never really happened. Then you would give me an answer but it wouldn't be a real answer because it never really happened.
