What 'America today'? We have lost so much of our Constitution with this preisident, it'll take decades to recover. This is not the country our founding fathers had in mind.

As to the quote. Remember, the Declaration is a call to unity to fight a foreign power, King George. It's a statement making reference to God (divine providence), and calls for everyone to work together (pledge to each other.....).
