I don't see any reason to mess with drive train as some have answered .It should all stay the same may need to make adjustments to bed and cab to make fit frame or chasis. I'm concerned about all the electronics. I'm just taking new cab and bed off to put on a 79 model bed and cab.

You know the drive lines are about the same I see no reason why it would not work. Why not something more exotic if you are going to spend two years modifying a 79 to fit a 2003 and it will look just like a 79 truck... why not a 49 to 2003 or 1952 / 2003.

Absolutely yes. In my area, it's common to take a new frame and drive train and place an older body on it. There is a little more work if you want a standard transmission, meaning you have a clutch to deal with. On some conversions, you have to move the cab mounts, on some you have to change the length of the drive shaft. On a conversion I did, I had to shop around for a rear universal joint that fit both my drive shaft and rear end yoke. I could have had the drive shaft cut and a new yoke installed on it for a $100 but why waste money if you can find something that will do the job with a modification.
