your local farm supply store sells scents to add to your kerosene that should help.

Well, Kerosene is a form of oil- and the exhaust you are smelling is..just that--- It shouldn't be to strong of a smell though... We had a few spots that froze and cracked, no fun- we went through afterward and Heat taped everything. So far 7 years all good.... Ya- when you were saying opening a door, lol :) but having the windows open just a hair would be plenty to circulate air in the basement... but not knowing how efficient the heater is for the size room you have it in... with the windows open a bit- it should still stay warm enough,,, but because frozen pipes are really really a pain to deal with, keep them closed, and open some in the day-... bring your pa down and ask him if he'd like the windows open just a hair... k :) It should still be OK either way, 20 isn't cold Yet

No matter what any one tells you , kerosene heaters should not be used in residential areas,

Those kinds of heaters do smell. Keep windows open a crack to let in air and exhaust carbon monoxide and other pollutants. They are a dangerous source of heat, in my opinion.

Keep the area "very" ventilated and hope it doesn't kill someone.
