one of the first things is make sure you clean the inside and the hull very well, wax the hull with a good wax and make sure the seats inside are clean and dry, drain the fuel tank down to about 1/4 and put in a good fuel stableizer, for an inboard motor, change the oil, hook up your hose adaptor and run the motor a little ( about 3 to 5 min to let the new oil get around inside the motor) then remove the hose and drane the water out of the motor water jackets ( check your owners manuel) remove the drain plug and put a small block under the motor hood to allow air to be able to get around the motor, remove the battery cables and take the battery out of the boat and put it so it can stay warm for the cold weather, remove the drain plug fron the lower unit and drain the oil out, replace it with new oil, make sure that all the water is out of the boat, your steering cables and other moving parts may have a grease zerk now is a good time to grease them, this will force out any water that may be inside, put the boat where the back of the boat is down hill so that is water gets inside it can drain, cover the boat with a good tarp and make a small stand out of some 2x4's so as to make a peak to keep water from ponding on the tarp, make sure that you tie the tarp very well and tight.
for out board motors you will have a few more grease zerks and the above still applies, when your ready for the spring fun your boat will only need a fresh tank of gas and after you charge the battery and install it your ready to go.
remember to put in the plug!

To winterize a boat you have to be sure all water systems are made so tahey can not freeze. Fresh wter systems, drain, we use a large cheap vodka, because it doesnt leave a horrible taste. Waste water systems, drain and add the pink antifreeze that is environmentally friendly. Be sure to include hot water system and gray water system if you have them.
For the engine, drain the watersystem, add antifreeze to the system. We have to run the system until the thermastat opens. It is always a good idea to change oil now.
Regarding outboard pontoon, if the pontoon is empty of water, it is fine for the winter.

On a outboard all you have to do is run it out of gas and change the lower unit grease.
