A free agent is a player who is not under contract and is eligible to play for any team in the NFL.

For example: Terrel Owens was under a multiple year contract last year with the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles kicked him off of them team because of his behavior. He then became a free agent and this year signed to play with the Dallas Cowboys.

A player becomes a free agent because of the following reasons:
1. He is unhappy with his salary and his current team doesn't want to pay him more or either doesn't have enough salary cap to pay him more. The player then plays out the final year of his contract and when he becomes a free agent he seeks more money with another team.
2. When a player's skill level diminishes a team will often cut (fire) the player to make room for another player that would benefit the team more.
3. If a player is not drafted, then he is a free agent and can try to get signed with any team.

An unrestricted free agent means that a player can sign with any team that wants him.

A restricted free agent means that a player is open to talk with any team, but his current team has the right to match any offers from other teams and keep the player.
