Can anyone help? I'm REALLY rubbish at maths no matter how easy they are!!! So can anyone help me?
Here are the questions:

Q1. Kathleen spent three-eights of her income on rent and two fifths of what was left on food. What fraction of her income was left after buying her food?

Q2. A merchant buys 28 crates each containing three-quarters of a ton of waste metal. What is the total weight of this order?

Q3. Which is larger, 3\4 of 2 and 1\2 or 2\5 of 6 and 1\2?

Q4. After James spent 2\5 of his pocket money on magazines, and 1\4 of his pocket money at a football match, he had 1.75 pounds left. How much pocket money did he have in the beginning?

Now guys I'm really stuck and I need something called HELP out here! So don't look at the question and just ignore it at least answer one question! And thankyou to all who's going to help me!

I am going to help. see how every thing is done.

Q1) Let katheleen income =X, then 3/8 * X =3x/8 for rent

What is left from 3x/8 = X - 3/X, or 3x/3 - 3x/8 =( 5/8 X)
What left from her income is then 5/8 X

now 2/5 times 5/8X =2/8 X = 1/4 X

What left of her income is 1/4 X or Quarter of her income.

Q2) Each crates weighs 3/4 tons.or 0.75 tons
the total weight of the order is 0.75 times 28 = 21.50 tons

Total weight of the merchant order = 21.5 tons21and 1/2.

Q3) 3/4 times2 + 1/2 = 3/4*4/2 =12/8 = 3/2

3/2 + 1/2 = 4/2 = 2

Now 2/5 times 6 = 2/5 * 6/1 = 12/5

12/5 + 1/2 = 12/5 + 5/10 = 24/10 + 5/10 =29/10 =2.9

Which is larger than 2.

Q4) Let James' pocket money = X

then X - (2/5 *X + 1/4 * X) = 1.75

20 X - ( 8X + 5X) = 35

20X-8X - 5X = 35
7X = 35
X = 35/7 = 5

James pocket money = 5 Pounds.

Are you happy now!

Most people, I believe, got Q2 and Q3 correct, however a handful got the others wrong. Here are my answers...

Q1 answer:
If Kathleen had, theoretically, 1 pound initially, she'll have 3/8 of a pound after paying rent. 1 * (3/8) = 3/8
Spending 2/5 OF WHAT SHE NOW HAS LEFT on food will leave her now with 3/20 of a pound. (3/8) * (2/5) = 3/20

The same mistake was made in Q4.

Q4 answer:
In order to get the correct fraction of money that James' 1.75 pounds represent, we'll represent his initial total as x. If James started with x pounds and spent 2/5 of in on magazines, he will now have (2/5)x pounds left.
x * (2/5) = (2/5)x
Spending 1/4 OF WHAT HE HAS LEFT at a football match will leave him with (1/10)x, or 1.75, pounds. Therefore, James initially had 17.50 pounds.
(2/5)x * (1/4) = (2/20)x = (1/10)x = 1.75
x = 1.75 / (1/10) = 17.5

I hope I helped.

Q1.

1 - 3/8 = 5/8 left after rent

5/8 * 2/5 = 10/40 = 1/4 spent on food

5/8 - 1/4 = 5/8 - 2/8 = 3/8 remaing after food and rent

Q2.

28 * 3/4 = 84/4 = 21 tonnes

Q3.

3/4 * 5/2 = 15/8 = 1.875
2/5 * 13/2 = 26/10 = 2.6 is larger

Q4.

wat portion does he have left?

1 - 2/5 = 3/5 3/5 - 1/4 = 7/20

so he's got 7/20 left which is £1.75

then the whole msut be 1.75 divide 7/20 = £5

1. Let the total income of Kathleen be 1

Therefore, 3/8 + 2/5 + x = 1

Therefore, x = 1 - (3/8 + 2/5)

x = 1 - (15 + 16)/40

x = 1 - 31/40

x = 9/40

2. 3/4 *28 = 21 tons

3. 3/4*2 = 3/2; 1/2*6 = 1/3 or 2/5*6 = 12/5; 1/2

2/5 of 6 is the largest

4. 2/5 + 1/4 + 1.75 = x

0.4 + .25 + 1.75 = x

x = 2.40 pounds.

Q1.

Let Kathleen's income be x

She spent 3/8 th's of her income on rent i.e., (3x)/8

So the remaining money is x - (3x)/8
= x(1-3/8)
= x(5/8)
= (5x)/8
2/5 th's of the amount left is spent on food i.e., 2/5{(5x)/8}
= x/4

So after buying the food 1/4 th of her income is left.

Q2.

28 * 3/4 ton = 21 tons.

Q3.

3/4 of 2 and 1/2 or 2/5 of 6 and 1/2
3/4 of (2+1/2) or 2/5 of (6+1/2)
3/4 of 5/2 or 2/5 of 13/2
3/4 * 5/2 or 2/5 * 13/2
15/8 or 13/5
1 and 7/8 or 6 and 1/2

So the second one 2/5 of 6 and 1/2 is larger.

Q4.

Let pocket money of James be x

He spent 2/5 of x i.e., (2x)/5 on magazines.

He spent 1/4 of x i.e., (x)/4 on football match.

So total amount spent by James is (2x)/5 + (x)/4
= (13x)/20

The remaining money James had is 1.75 pounds

Total amount - remaining amount = 1.75
x - (13x)/20 = 1.75
x( 1 - 13/20 ) = 1.75
x(7/20) =1.75
x = 1.75 * 20/7
x = 5 Pounds.

Hope this helped you.
Good Luck.

Q1 .make everything the same then it is easier.
3/8=15/40(x5)
2/5=16/40(x8)
spent = 15/40 +16/40=31/40
left=31/40- 40/40= 9/40
seee , easy.

Q2 . 1 crate=3/4 ton
28 crate=3x28 /4
= 84/4
=21 tons.
see not that difficult
Q3. not clear
Q4. 2/5= 8/20(x4)
1/4= 5/20(x5)
spent= 13/20
left=7/20
1.75 pounds= 7/20
1.75 divide by7 x 20
will get you the answer.

come on surely you don't expect me to do everything???

1)income =x
rent =3x/8
left =x-3x/8=5x/8
on food =2/5(5x/8)=x/4
income now left with her =5x/8-x/4=3x/8
fraction of her income left =(3x/8)/x=3/8
2)total crates =28
waste in 1 crate=3/4(1 ton )=3/4 (100kg)=75kg
total wt.= 28x75=2100kg

3)3/4(2+1/2) 2/5(6+1/2)
3/4(5/2) 2/5(13/2)
15/8 13/5
15x5/8x5 13x8/5x8
75/40 < 104/40
4)let pocket money =x
on magazines=2x/5
on football match =x/4
left=x-(2x/5+x/4)=7x/20
but we know left pm=1.75p
7x/20=1.75p
x=5p

These all involve the multiplication of fractions.

A/B*C/D=AC/BD. Sometimes you are given information on the left hand side, sometimes on the right. Sometimes, you need to extend the formula to multiply by E/F as well, but it's the same process. You should be able to get all of these answers from there, so long as you know how to change a mixed number into an "improper fraction" (quotes because it's the most proper type for most problems.)
