cubic meter = meter^3
meter^3 = (100 centimeter)^3 = 1,000,000 cubic centimeters
cubic meter = 1,000,000 milliliters

yeah, metric is that easy, lol...I hope that one day America will see this and actually use it. The problem is that people don't have a concept of kilograms or meters, whereas they can 'see' and 'feel' pounds and miles in their minds. A switch would be tough for some people, but they'll get over it, the rest of the world did...(well, except England)
