I have dial-up and plan to get either DSL or cable. We want two computers to run at the same time. Is one system preferred over the other for this or do we always need to get a router and set up a network regardless.

In order for two computers to use the same connection, you will need to use a network. On the note of a router, it is also possible to use a hub which is a cheaper networking device, but will allow your ISP to see that you have to computers using the same internet connection. Some ISP's make you pay extra for a second computer, which is why people typically use a router because the router itself is the only device that appears to the ISP and the router manages the two computers instead acting as the middle man.

If you want to run two computers, you should get a router. You can get a wireless router if you don't want to wire up a network.

Some cable modems have multiple ports on them or are wireless, so you don't need a separate device. In that case, the router is built into it.

For two computers, use a router. That is the smart move. It would be foolish to buy two services, when you can use a router to share the internet connection. This will also provide you with a network, so you can share a printer.

I recommend getting a Linksys. (Oh, some providers will include a FREE router, so look at the packages that they offer.)

I am not a computer intellect but I believe to run more than one computer you will need a router.

you can run a peer to peer network (daisy chain) without the router, but the router will be a lot faster.
