Hi i bought a silver tea set today at a car boot sale. The man told me he tought it was sterling silver. But there are no marks on it anywhere and it is heavy. Is there any way of telling. Rose

there a small chance that u have the real thing. the drop dead real silver and sterling have been long gone, some may be on a mantle here and there but as a 45 year, dealer i don't see you have much of a chance. you can look again at the back. there some stuff out there that has a very smalll makers mark. if you can bring your self to take a chunk out of the bottom and look at where a pocket kinfe could cut away the surface enough to show the under metal, at a s[pot u don't notice, so if it is yellow underneath you have silver plated copper, then if it just lead it will cut away and may even pliable it could be junk, the best beat is to take a small piece (pitcher)to some one you know that has a resale jewelry shop and see i their eyes pop out if they don't enjoy it there aren't many out there that the dealers don't have

I'm sure you could find home remedies for bringing out the shine of most metals, although you couldn't find one that would definetly point to silver as the material of composition!

If it's silver, you may have to look, but it will be there!

If not, you just bought a silver set made of Peuter!

Good luck!

Any sterling silver piece should have 925 or an assay mark stamped on them. If it's really a sterling silver tea set, it would be worth a fortune, and would have several stamps - hallmarks; assay marks and maker's name among others.

My guess is that it's silver plate.

All sterling silver rings could have .925 stamp on it someplace, or "sterling silver". There are somewhat some counterfeits although besides, i could be weary of something that sounds too stable to be real!

It may have some sort of mark from the company or person(s) who made the silver.

If it's pretty and you are going to get a lot of use from it , then it was worth the price. Buying from a car trunk can be scary be careful next time.

All silver should carry a hallmark.

I heard somewhere if it is real silver a magnet won't stick to it....if the magnet sticks its just metal...
