Cobweb stems from ME (Middle English) from coppe - spider + web. It now refers to any filmy web spun by a spider or any insect (larva?) or any similar web. A spider web is a cobweb spun by an actual spider and perhaps the spider must be there to be certain it is not a look-a-like web since there are so many kinds. Spiders spin a tough fiber (used in rifle scope cross-hairs!) covered at intervals with tiny drops of sticky (oil?) goo that help capture prey. Would a strong web of cotton thread catch anything? They are often hard to wipe away because they are so sticky and can hold lots of dust too.

I think that cob webs are what a spider leaves behind when she moves on, a bit like an empty house. A spider web is where the spider is still there, catching her prey.

Maybe spider webs are the fully formed hexaganol shaped webs and cob webs are the more dusty looking ones!

A Cob is a name for a sort of horse...I bet cob webs are pretty damn big & probably designed by Cobs to catch elephants or similar sized foodstuff. If you have cob webs in your house I would seriously consider moving out!

They're both made by spiders. But at least in UK English, a "spider web" is a fresh one with the spider on or nearby, but a "cobweb" is an old dusty one.

,What are usually referred to as cobwebs are made of electrostatically charged dust which forms a string, try breaking one, it has no strength whereas a spider web has enough strength for you to feel, of course sometimes a strand of spiderweb will become covered with dust. But the normal cobweb which forms usually over a source of heat is just dust.I believe that at one time the two terms were synonymous.

Spider webs are to be found outdoors on plants, trees and strung across footpaths. They collect early morning dew, raindrops and of course, soon to be dead inescts. Cobwebs sit happily in areas of our homes that are usually hard to reach and collect dust as well as sometimes hiding the spider still lurking inside.

Good question. i did not know too so i checked with Wilkepedia, the free internet dictionary.
Middle English word for spider is "coppe" Hence spiderweb and cobweb are the same. Current usage denotes that a cobweb is when the spider does not reside there anymore..
