What is the defining movie for the 90s and 00s?
I think "The Opposite of Sex" should be in there somewhere

Yeah I've got to go with Rico on Fight Club - that really hit home for me, pardon the pun there, because people really are so materialistic, I loved the guy's obsession for the perfect Ikea home and the futility of existence that he felt. Returning to a much more primevil way of life was portrayed so well - that film is cult and is a definite portrayal of how sorry our society has become and is continuing to be. I quite liked 12 monkeys as well for a futuristic image of the world in chaos, maybe Brad Pitt is the connection here and we should make him president so he can get some laws made to back all this stuff up!

I was very tempted to respond with 'The Lord of The Rings' trilogy, because it combines a need for engaging with the forces of good and evil with a need for fantasy - so we still have a moral sense but we feed it with escapism rather than actual action.

But on reflection I think that this decade's movie has to be 'Good Night and Good Luck,' because it has so much to say about the difficulties of being a truth-teller taking on a tyrant; the prescience in the opening and closing moments when Murrow talks about what will happen to the media (television especially); and because of the meta-message that says that attempts to bring us to our collective senses have largely passed out of the power of politicians and have been left to the liberal media.

for the 90s....definitely Primary Colors: a fictional but realistic depiction of Bill Clinton's character and politics

for 00s....Fahrenheit 911: a humorous and biting portrait of a president who gained office with less votes than his opponent

90's Pulp Fiction.

Violence for its own sake.

00's. Wait 4 years, the defining movie may not have even come out yet. :-)

lost in Translation is really the perfect action picture from 2000 so a concepts in my recommendations. My well-known action picture of all time, even =) well worth staring at in case you have ever lived via that type of instantaneous magical friendship it is depicted in the action picture. this is life and action picture magic all mixed mutually.
