Presidential hopeful, Senator Barack of Illinois. Do you think America is ready for a minority President? I look at it this way. Whoever is the most qualified is the right person. Male or female. I have to admit that it would be nice to see a "qualified" minority or woman as the President of the United States. Why? Because we are a "diverse" people. Not just representative of one race but many. Again, my concern above all is to ensure that the right person is sitting in the White House. Regardless of color. We've got too many issues that need to be addressed and the wrong person could cause our country to implode on itself. Any thoughts?

Personally, I think Obama should run and I think if he does he'll win.

First, he's the single best public speaker I've heard in a generation. He is positively inspiring - and that isn't just his style, but also the content of his speaking. He is quite moderate, knows how to appeal to a variety of groups, and his story itself is a great embodiment of the American dream.

I will grant that he doesn't have much experience, but in modern elections I believe experience is primarily an impediment. It has been ages since we elected a Senator, and that's true largely because Senators have voting records that can be held against them. Instead we've been electing governors, because they don't pass laws, but merely sign them. Therefore, I think his brief voting record will actually be a plus.

Certainly there will be some who won't vote for him simply because of his ethnicity, but in a strange way I think his ethnicity will actually protect him from some of the most vicious attacks. The conservative attack machine may be forced to talk about ideas rather than anything else for fear of coming across as racists. Cynical perhaps, but valid.

Finally, I think he'll be president because he is the only person I've ever seen who immediately made me think, "this man should be president!"

As an Independent who has voted Repub. the las few years I have to say that I like this guy. I have listened to this man speak and he's the first Democrat I've heard answer a question honestly without resorting to the tactic of "answering a question with another question". I'm impressed by that. Lately to many Dems refuse to give honest answers about anything. Although I dont agree with all of his positions (can anyone say they agree completely with any politicians positions? Ex. I agree with the Bush Foriegn Policy, but I have serious issues with some of his Domestic Policies) I would definitely vote for him if he ran for President. it is my opinion that he would make the only viable candidate at this time. That may change but as of now he would get my vote. As far as race goes, it seems we will never get past it if people cant look beyond a persons skin color. Questions like yours do not help this matter when it comes to some people. When i say the name Barack Obama the 1st thing that popped into my head was a young poltician who doesnt appear to be corrupted by Poltics. I never considered his race until I got further into the question. If people could look at others for who they are and what they have done, not their race, this country would definitely be a better place........

That's just my opinion anyway......

I think the country is ready for a minority as President, but the person to break that barrier is going to have to be a total moderate in order to get elected. This is because moderates swing presidential elections. The partisan and party faithful do not, except in cases where they refuse to vote in protest. Obama is not the guy at this time because he is too liberal on many of his platform stances, but you never know.

Pronk: Your assessment is not based in fact. We have not had a viable minority candidate run for President to this point in history. So no one knows who the South will or won't vote for in this area.

No, you're in simple terms user-friendly incorrect. Obama become born in Hawaii, and Arthur, in spite of comparable rumors circulated in the time of his election marketing campaign, become born in Fairfield, Vermont. His FATHER immigrated from eire and lived temporarily in Canada in the past coming to the U. S..

NO!!! BTW, we have to get rid of the word "DIVERSE"
and put in the word "UNITED" and we do have a whole lot of issues to deal with and I really think that Condolezza Rice would be a excellant person to be President of the
USA because she is a very intelligant woman and is experienced with world politics.Gender and race do not
play any part with my opinion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Right now, he looks to be the most qualified, and since he happens to be half black, would be a good coup for the black minority in this country. However, there are enough good-ol'-boy rednecks still out among the masses, that I would be concerned for him. He has my vote if he shows up on the national polls. He appears to have true integrity, something so lacking in the people who make it that far.

And even if they DO make it that far, look what happened to Carter. Since he would not play the dirty politics, you-scratch-my-back-I'll scratch-yours game, he was a single term president.
