You are running to high of a load of programs or processes on your computer. Your computer uses virtual memory when you run out of RAM virtual memory is allocated from your hard drive. I DO NOT RECOMMEND changing your virtual memory settings as you may find that you just fried your hard drive. If you completely fill a hard drive with data (leaving no excess room). Nothing can be deleted or added.

I would recommend adding MORE ram to your computer. See the following Source for a guide of how to do this.

That could be why it's running slow. Has your computer been running slow for a long time or did this just happen from one day to the other?

It's good to know how much memory (RAM) your pc has. Right click on "My Computer" and click "Properties"... A window will open. It has some information about your computer specifically the CPU speed and the amount of RAM.

Which version of windows are you running?
Windows XP with 256mb RAM can drag after opening a few applications at the same time. You probably already have some applications running in the background upon start up.

The only thing you really need to remain in start up is the antivirus. Things like AOL Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, Quicktime, RealPlayer etc... can be removed from startup... that will free up some memory.

Before you start removing things you should see what's taking up the resources. Open up task manager (ctrl + shift + esc)... Click on the "Processes" tab and make note of the applications that are taking up the most memory. Also click on the "Performance" tab and make note of the "PF Usage".

Come back with that information and hopefully we can help a little more. :o)

When a program is run it needs RAM memory but if there isn't enough of it, the PC starts to use virtual memory. Programs that aren't being used are moved to a space on the HD to free up memory. Since the HD is slower than RAM this can slow your computer down.
To increase it: Right click on "My Computer" > Advanced > "Setup" under performance > Advanced > "Change" under Virtual memory > Change the values to 1.5 to 3 times the amount of RAM you have.

Your computer is running low on hard drive space. To see how much space is allocated to "Virtual Memory" do the following (Windows XP)

Start - Control Panel - System - Advanced- Performance - Advanced

From here you will see the amount of virtual memory Windows had allowocated to you.

Your running to many programs in the background, press control, alt and delete together to see what is running, Also you may have a spyware problem if your processor is running at 100% continuously.
