Is there any way to be able to play a US purchased ~ NTSC Playstation 2 game on a UK ~ PAL PS2 playstation? Can my UK machine be reset or 'tweaked' to use the US game?
The game in question is the recent 'Kingdom Hearts II'

Ideally, you need to get your PS2 'chipped'. This means having the console modified by wiring in a dedicated chip which gets around the region lockout. The only issue is that it's illegal to fit these chips, so you'll have to do a bit of digging to find somewhere that'll sell one to you.

There are some methods which allow you to run games by swapping discs after the region protection system has verified (using Swap Magic or similar discs) but these are quite a lot of hassle, and you have to do the disc swap every time you want to play the imported game.

The PS2 will output the game in NTSC60. This means that you will need a TV that can handle a 60Hz signal (the vast majority of them can) and also handle NTSC colour decoding (the majority can't). However, there is a way around the latter issue - if you connect your PS2 up using an RGB lead (not the standard lead that's included with the console), the TV doesn't need to do any colour decoding so doesn't need to be NTSC compatible.

Not sure - if your TV is NTSC compatible I thought it might just work without modification, it depends if the PS2 is hardwired to only accept PAL games. I know you can play NTSC Region 1 DVD's with a software player (DVD Region X) so it is possible to output an NTSC signal from a PAL PS2.

you will need a boot disk like "Swap Magic" (or chipped playstation) to get passed the country protection on the ps2, then you will need a TV that supports either NTSC, or RGB (with an RGB cable), otherwise you will be playing in black and white.

You can use a forced pal mode in Swap Magic, but it usually causes jumpy playback in video sequences. its best to stick with the standard mode, and get a decent video cable for your ps2
