Spain was conquered and occupied by several peoples including the Moors. The influence of the Moors on Southern Europe was hugh. William Shakespear's Orthello has Orthello The Moor as the main character. The Spanish finally drove the Moors out. The book/movie El Cid dealt with the effort to expell the Moors.

But your question is about "Arab ancestry". It is unlikely they are of Arab ancestry. Arabia is far removed from Spain and there is no evidence I know of of Arabia ever occupying Spain. The Moors came from what is now Morroco and were unrelated to the Arabians.

Orthello makes it abundantly clear Moors were well respected in some circles and in many cases were allies with Southern European countries against enemies from the East

No !

No !

No They Are Not !

The Arabs invaded Spain in the past but the Spanish people fought them and send them back to Africa. Many nations invaded other countries, that doesn't mean that they are ancestors.

The Iberian continent was also invaded by Germanic tribes after the fall of the Roman empire. Does that make the Spanish, Germans ? It's like saying that the Spaniots are anything but Spaniots. That's unfair for a nation with an ancient civilization that had been constant living in its mother land for more than 3 millenniums. The Spaniots had an advanced culture when the Germans were living in caves and the Arabs didn't even had a language.

Thanks to the Spanish Nation for cleaning the West part of Europe !

Arabs invaded Iberian Peninsula ,no longer Black Africans, those have been frequently slaves. The term "moors" is a derogatory term used to describe them because of the enmity between Muslim Arabs and Christian Western Europeans (Arabs used some words too yet there is not any time for that LOL). This term became coined quite a few years (possibly centuries) after Arabs left Iberian Peninsula. those orientalistic artwork that look once you google "moors" are no longer something yet imaginary farse that may t depend as a depended on source, rather with severe hatred for Muslims interior the nineteenth century till now (Euros theory that depicting Arabs as Black is a few thing undesirable and offensive)

If they are or their ancestors are from Spain, then it's a distinct possibility. Arabs were in Spain for many years and finally Isabella and Ferdinand won the war which evicted the Moors from Spain. This freed up money for them to send Christopher Columbus to "discover" the new world. The spanish last name "Medina" is the arabic word for city and there are many spanish surnames which begin with "AL" just like arab surnames.

The moors invaded spain in 711 and weren't expelled until 1492. So for 700 years, Islamic/Arabic culture played a major role in Spain.
