Asked a question on here about watching TV shows and was given some bit torrent site to download things off of - ever since - major problems with my computer so I found all those files that I could and removed them - still problems.

Read on CNET Trojan Hunter & Hijack this are safe but are they? I don't want to download more problems.

My Norton has been telling me to wait for it to scan files like - sap.dat, waol.exe, excel.cab, normal.dot, winword.exe and I got a Dr Watson Post Mortem message. With Dr. Watson - there seems to be some people who say it comes with the computer to protect the computer and some say it is a virus - The other file names seem normal but Norton scans them and they come up over and over again - uninfected but there is some kind of problem. All virus scans are clean - Spybot, Defender, Norton, The Cleaner(for trojans) and my Trojan Remover program expired - but something is wrong - computer is acting strange and things are changing, etc. :) Pls help

Thanks for the post beer but I am not too into trusting any links from here now - free does not mean safe - are the ones I mentioned safe or does anyone know what beer left me a link for anyways - he didn't say?

I did scan the files for viruses - not lazy or any of the other useless and rude comments you left - but thanks for your time - you really need to cheer up.. taking your "anger" out on some yahoo answers people..really.

The problem is when you downloaded files from the net, you DID NOT Right-click the file and let Norton scan it BEFORE you opened it! Just having a virus scanner on your computer is useless if you download blindly off the net and are too lazy to locate the file you just downloaded and scan it for viruses before you open it, or play it. I hope you've learned something from all this. It's up to YOU to scan files YOU download or it's YOUR problem. Sorry for the preaching but no one seems to learn about virus scanning until they HAVE to. You had all the tools, you just didn't use them correctly. good luck :-)

Never EVER go to a site and download ANYTHING you are not sure of. Rule no.1.

If Spybot and your virus checker has found nothing then that means whatever you downloaded has hidden some files. Do you have yahoo antispy? If you don't download that and run it. That site is SAFE.
I would recommend you install the free version of windows washer too. This will clean up your registry after removing those files you mentioned.
If that doesn't improve your pc then I would suggest you get the hard drive formatted but save to disk anything you want to keep, photos etc... as formatting will wipe the entire drive clean, then reinstall your windows and other programs you use.
A learning experience yes, but not one you will ever do again.

Depending on how safe you surf, you may not need an active monitoring app,
such as TeaTimer, which is in Spybot S&D.

By installing the hosts file, IE-SPYADs, SiteAdvisor and WinPatrol,
you will have a pretty good line of defense which won't use up any resources.
this is the link you reqire for the apps http://temerc.com/hddncounttuts.html...

for anti virus use http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
And of course a firewall is a must,
tho the XP SP 2 firewall is not sufficient in my opinion.
It only blocks incoming attacks, and should something get thru and that's always possible,
then it can call out to get more things installed or use your machine as a zombie
I'd recommend Zone Alarm, but one of the older versions from here:
http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=...

Either of the 4.5 versions seem to work best, less buggy than current ones
this is the link you reqire for the apps http://temerc.com/hddncounttuts.html...

i have all the installers saved on disc if you would like them e mail me

Beer told you to go to ewidos site . This is safe the program is called Ewido Anti-Malware 4.0 now registered to Grisoft, the makers of the oh so popular AVG AntiVirus.

Now you probably have viruses and stuff there clogging your pc down. Try going to http://housecall.trendmicro.com and running an online scan. You could also try http://www.bitdefender.com and search through the website for an online scan. http://www.mcafee.com is also a great online scanner. One of those should work! Good luck!

it seems your computer is infected by spyware (not too dangerous) and you can't remove the files if the files still 'open'. spyware start to 'open' when you start your windows.

Dr. Watson is program from microsoft to report an error in windows system, not to protect .

It's safe to install torrent (i use uTorrent).

to get rid all the problem - the best way i think :
- Re-install your windows - clean install.
- Put antivirus like AVG (free edition)
- Install firewall - ZoneAlarm (free edition)

Spybot, AdAware, Norton, Windows Defender. Ewido, Yahoo antispy (with yahoo toolbar), Norton antispy (with yahoo toolbar), Webroot Spysweeper(not free) etc are safe. ZoneAlarm firewall is too good.
Beerfarts gave u a safe link. Ewido online scan is good against trojans. Ewido is now bought by AVG, u may have heard of them. They have a paid version of normal scanner too. Their free online scan removes trojans.
List of safe and free online scanners
Ewido http://www.ewido.net , housecall by trend micro http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ , Bitdefender http://www.bitdefender.com/site/home/ I think there is also an online scan by Symantec, but not sure though whether they remove infections. Most of these scans would require you, use Internet Explorer.

Again, scan with your softwares in windows safe mode and remove infections. In windows safe mode, malwares, viruses etc are most vulnerable and can be removed easier. Safe mode scanning requires more time. Press F8 repeatedly during computer startup to get to windows safe mode.
Hijackthis is a good & powerful software, but donot use it unless u are a professional, or u know to deal with scan results.Along with infections, it shows many normal things during scans which shouldnot be removed, . Its better to google or ask someone who knows, or check any forums before deleting your findings in hijackthis

You may also want McAfee Siteadvisor or analyse any sites using siteadvisor's site - http://www.siteadvisor.com to check web safety (example - type yahoo.com for yahoo) . You are right, though there are many good links in your question, u should doublecheck things before going to any site

You get what you pay for. Sotp trying to downlaod free stuff from Torrents and your future will be brighter. Torrents only have viruses attached to illegal/pirated sofwtare and music and movies. TOTALLY ILLEGAL>>>!!

My Advice, now that you are totally infected with Spyware and trojans, is this.

FIRST, go to download.com Get Adaware Personal. Download it, install it and update it. Then have it scan and remove Spyware.
UNINSTALL IT.
Go back to Download.com, find Spybot Search and Destroy. Download it, install it, update it, thne have it scan and remove Spyware. then UNINSTALL IT.
Go BACK to Download.com, find AVG Free Antivirus. Download, Instll, Update and use it to scna and remove Trojans and Viruses.
After al of that, if you STILL have problems, get Hijack This(IT IS SAFE). Run it, it will give you a list of things on your PC. Take that list, and go here:
http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/You_Must_Read_This_Before_Posting_A_Hijackthis_Log-t2852.html
THAT LINK IS PERFECTLY SAFE, I GURANTEE IT. IF YOU ARE UNSURE< CONTACT ME!!!!
