I have bought a new monitor and when I set it up it came with a dvi-d cable which says optional but what does it do?

It stands for Digital Video Interface.... It transports digital video information from a digital source to your monitor. If you don't have a digital source, ignore it... for now. Beware... not all DVI sources are digital. The biggest problem with DVI is that it can be used for digital as well as analog signals (or both). This cable is a Digital Video Input cable. It is a direct link for digital video and is a better connection than your ordinary input. Better image, clarity, etc. If you have the input then you should use it.
