Awards.
Studies have shown that family friendly movies (g,pg) could/would generate more money, but they don't get the awards.

Box office Gross. New Line Cinema bet the future of their studio when they invested $300 million to bankroll The Lord of the Rings. The movies won multiple awards, of course, but if the movies flopped at the box office, the studio would be out of business today and Peter Jackson would be selling Hondas in New Zealand

Definitely awards. An award such as an Oscar gives a movie more box office power. An award is especially good for obsolete, unknown movies, particularly independent movies, that did poorly at the box office because it doesn't have the budget or backing of a major movie studio to advertise. A lot of good movies have gone unoticed because of this, so thank goodness for independent film festivals such as Sundance that give it a chance to be seen. No one had ever heard of the movie "The Full Monty" until it got nominated for an Oscar. Turns out that because of the nomination, it got my curiosity, I rented it, bought it cause I just love that movie! The Blair Witch Project on the other hand, had a huge success at the box office but turned out to be a real stinker. It wasn't long before the word got out on that one, and my self and a lot of other people I know aren't getting duped by the big advertisements anymore. It seems like when the movie s*ucks , they spend more on advertising cause they gotta get their money back and they know it, so they spend big on advertising.

Depends on if you are the producer, director, actor or watcher. Producer wants gross, director wants awards but good gross means more opportunity, actor wants awards and gross (bankable actors get more work) and watcher doesn't care about either, good script, acting, directing, etc...is what we're looking for!
