Desaru is at the east coast of Malaysia hence would be affected by the year end monsoon, anyway there are still many interesting places to visit at the west coast, like [islands with nice beaches] Langkawi, Penang, Pangkor etc, [highland/mountain retreat] Maxwell or Larut, Cameron, Genting, Fraser, Ledang etc . there are also national park in Jerantut, Pahang, state park in Endau Rombin, Johor n Belum in Perak. You may try also some lakes like Chini, Bera, Pedu etc.
But i guess you n co love the beaches since your first intention are Desaru, so those islands i mentioned should be able to provide you a wonderful holiday !
i don't know where you come from, otherwise could proposed a more suitable[closer to you] place for you to chill out, for example if you are from the south then Langkawi/Penang may be a little too far !
you may email me with particular of your group preferences like beaches, adventures, just laze around, cool mountain retreat, shopping, food, natural waterfalls or whatever you planned to do[please include the duration of the holiday], so that i could provide you the most details possible !
just wanted to share my traveling[within Malaysia] experience !

You are right. There is monsoon starting from Oct onward. It is windy, strong wave, and not much people dare to swim to the deep sea during this season, and not advisible also.
There are still others activity other than the swimming in sea and those sea-related activity.
Rafting - a boat can occupy up to 6 -10 people.
Archery.
Sun bathing, BBQ.
Go-kart.
Motor-aeroplane - it only can take 2 person at one time, it take off from the groud and maximum height around 100 meter in the sky. It cost around RM180 for 1/2 hour flight.
Horse-riding.
Those was activity I do enjoying few years ago. Hopefully, those activity is still for people to explore.
Wish you a good trip in Desaru.
