I disagree with the guy that says that he wants to be different. Sometimes a person looks better with silver/white gold/platinum rather than with yellow gold. Also, white gold is more classic. Right now, platinum is in. White gold has the same type of finish. Also, depending on your skin tone, white gold can stand out against your tone better than yellow gold.
So really it doesn't mean anything. He probably just thinks you look better with white gold than yellow.

It means he has good taste. Do you have olive skin or a tan? The white gold goes better than yellow. Also if you wear silver he might think you like the color better.

It's just a personal preference. I hardly ever wear yellow gold; I just prefer the look of white gold or sterling.
