You should always consider paying for an Anti-Virus or Firewall solution because this insures that it's strong!
If you really don't have the cash to pay for something good like
Sophos antivirus, Kaspersky Labs or even FPROT.
You could always try AVG. Some of the older versions work better on an older computer, It's great because it updates itself.

Try avast for windows, as well as a spyware or mal ware blocker/scanner and a firewall solution..that is nice.

For Mac OSX there is always the excellent ClamAV for OSX (based on a free open source antivirus library, constantly updated and checked for new viriii in the wild). Also of mention are the older Vshield and Little Snitch (which is shareware, but helps block unwanted malware from communicating with anything).

Some good sources of this kind of software for windows:
filehippo.com,
softpedia.com,
nonags.com,
versiontracker.com;

For Macintosh OSX there are some good sites at
www.pure-mac.com and
versiontracker.com.

So some cool sites to get free ware that is useful (look for antivirus stuff here) for linux users is always my favorite:
www.sf.net and www.icewalkers.com.

This was my unbiased opinion. I do not represent any commercial entity.

also: do the research for yourself on newsgroups and don't use the online anti virus tools.. (through a web browser) if you a really infected..i find that you might have to completly start up your computer from a clean drive.somehow..if your HD is really infected (the boot sector).

I hope that helped!

avg is the best as it includes free updates run with ewido, dont use ewido online just use the scanner once a week a must is also the following, they use little resorces
Depending on how safe you surf, you may not need an active monitoring app,
such as TeaTimer, which is in Spybot S&D.

By installing the hosts file, IE-SPYADs, SiteAdvisor and WinPatrol,
you will have a pretty good line of defense which won't use up any resources. see the link below.

And of course a firewall is a must,
tho the XP SP 2 firewall is not sufficient in my opinion.
It only blocks incoming attacks, and should something get thru and that's always possible,
then it can call out to get more things installed or use your machine as a zombie I'd recommend Zone Alarm, but one of the older versions from here:
http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=zalarm

Either of the 4.5 versions seem to work best, less buggy than current ones

for the apps mentioned use the link below

it all works fine

AVG is the only free one that I know of, it updates daily for free so you could give that a try. For a strong Anti-Virus you need to buy Norton Internet Security or eTrust Internet Security. I use eTrust and love it.

Yes AVG is the only one I know that is free, they also have a better paid for version but if you look at http://anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com/
you will see the best value paid for utility is only $24.99 or about £13.
So really the choice is yours.
