People have faulty memories, and may not have known what they were supposed to remember in the first place. Before global warming achieved currency, I'd always hear people talk about how the weather was different now that when they were kids. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't, but if you think back to the 70's and 80's can you tell me what the high and low temperature was where you were on ANY day without looking it up? If you can't, how can you be sure that the summers were longer and hotter and the winters were colder? Global warming is talking about changes of just a few degrees over time periods of decades, you simply cannot remember that sort of thing locally, much less globally. Also, since it's the mean temperature that's being discussed you have to remember not just how warm it was, but how cold it got a night, too. If it was drier then, it could easily have been hotter during the daytime but cooler at night, and the mean temperature could have been less than today even if the days were warmer. People also tend to remember extremes (hot and cold spells) because those create stronger memories than day after day of moderate temperatures. I believe you when you say that is what you remember, but memories are deficient--that's why we keep records.
