A meade ETX 90- it's a scope you will use for the rest of your life even if you move on to bigger things. It also keeps it's resell value fairly well.

Stay away from the high street and go to a professional astronomy company. Let me know where you are and I'll give you some names..

Depends on what you want to spend.

Stay away from very cheap telescopes that advertise "600 power!!!' or something like that. Most are junk. If you can't afford at least $200, get binoculars instead. You can do a lot with those.

Orion is an inexpensive brand with a reputation for decent quality. Here's my low price recommendation:

A bit better would be:

http://www.telescope.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=447&itemType=PRODUCT&iMainCat=4&iSubCat=13&iProductID=447

which is a very popular model.

Meade and Celestron are middle brands, pretty good, not the best. The Meade ETX90 recommended above is good, about $600.

The very best are Questar and Televue, but they're also extremely expensive. Thousands of dollars.
