Yes they were, my Mother was sent from Jarrow in the North East (near Sunderland) to Southampton to be shipped to Australia. But she met my Dad here and refused to go, lucky for me Eh. And my mothe was neither Catholic or an Orphan and she was evacuated down to the South coast with her whole family. Her Father was one of the Jarrow Hunger Marchers.

I think that the children who went to Australia were mainly catholic orphans, who were taken there by priests.. I suspect that very few of them were returned after the war, as they would have had no where to return to, even if they did, they would not have had the money for the fare. Most of the children were `cheap labour` for the farmers and they worked on the sheep farms. Girls worked as domestic servants. I understand that they were not treated well by and large at the homes they were sent to A few years ago a group of them, now adults, formed a `pressure group` to try to get compensation from the church ,for what they did to them. I am afraid I do not know what the outcome of this was.

those destructive babies have been taken from undesirable properties and sent to Australia interior the theory they might get a greater constructive start up in life. The governments that sent them did so in solid faith. the matters began whilst they landed in Australia, the Australian government replaced into, and nevertheless is answerable for neglecting the we faree of those babies who have been entrusted to them. Australian regimes are no longer precisely properly frequent for the solid treatment of their community aboriginal babies ! I anticipate the notice "reimbursement" to be heard any day now.
