I suggest that you start with tai chi and then move on to somethng like tae kwan do.

The tai chi will train and strengthen the muscles you need for any martial art. It will give you the smoothness and control you will need. And don't let the slowness of it fool you. It takes more strength and coordination. It is martial art practiced in slow motion and such would be my first choice for a beginner--
then go on to whichever branch you like best--Karate (arm strength) (Kung Fu- a lot of leg work) Tae Kwan Do (a kind of all rounder).

A lot of people are taking up Jiu Jitsu these days. With the exception of Mixed Martial Arts [Combination of Boxing, Muay Thai, and Jiu Jitsu] I have not seen one single martial art beat Jiu Jitsu.

I've seen videos of a Karate and Kung Fu expert go against practitioners in Jiu Jitsu and they get their butt handed to them.

If you take up Boxing and Muay Thai, too, you won't be messed with.

Aikido or Kenpo. They are both self-defense oriented, but very different. I have a friend who got a black belt in Shodokan Karate and ended up screwing up her back and hips after years of practice. If you are younger, I'd suggest Kenpo. If older, Aikido.
