The Seven Samurai was it. The Magnificent Seven was the U.S. version which was also great. Battleship Potemkin would be a very close second. Anything by Jean Renoir would be a close third (Grand Illusion, etc.).
I am not including Hitchcock as all his major stuff came after he emigrated to the U.S.

I'm different, but I'll say Godzilla. There have been a few versions made in the past; the first was just the original with footage added in of Raymond Burr narrating. Most recently there was an awful, awful “remake” starring Matthew Broderick. This remake was made fun of in the most recent real Godzilla movie, “Final Wars”. Oddly enough, the original “Gojira” is basically a remake of an American movie called “The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms”.

My personal favorite was a movie made back in 1992 called
"Like water for Chocolate". To this day everytime I watch that movie I have to have sex with my hubby! An incredible romantic and sexy story of family, love and life.
