Governments ban headscarves to discourage practicing muslims from being too religious.

In France they justified doing this in the name of secularism. They feebly attempted to make it look like they weren't targeting muslims by also banning yamulkas and ostentatious crucifixes in public workplaces and schools.

Well, many muslim women feel that they aren't fully participating in their religion if they don't wear a scarf. Once they start wearing it, they feel naked in public without it in public. Yamulkas are certainly important to some jews for religious reasons, but I don't ever recall reading in the bible that it is an obligation to wear an ostentatious crucifix. So France, who prides itself on diplomacy, is the leader in banning the full practice of religion for its minority groups.

Turkey (a muslim country) also banned the headscarf in public institutions. The gov't reason there, though, was different. The fascists want to control Islam so that the majority muslims don't unite and act as a political force for humane reform. This, along with closing mosques so that people can't congregate and arresting practitioners, are fairly common control tactics amongst the "friends" of the west in the middle east (Egypt, Uzbekistan).

I can't imagine why indivuduals would want to stop someone from dressing in a manner that puts them at peace, unless it is offensive to someone. I can't think of any reason why an intelligent person would be offended by someone wearing a scarf.

As far as what is symbolizes, I encourage you to ask a woman in a scarf what it symbolizes for her. She will tell you modesty and dignity. Is that so offensive?

It's not hijabs that people are objecting to, it's more burkhas which cover the entire face that they are opposed to. THe argument is that if some women can wear a hijab then why can't all women, that's like saying if some women choose to wear a skirt then why can't all women?

They want to ban them because they're sexist, islamophobic and averse to change.

I agree that the hijab is quite attractive, but if a woman wants to choose a different style, why can't she have that option?

Because too many Americans fear the unknown. These people also fear learning about the unusual or different.

It's ok for a nun to wear her habit, but not a Muslim woman to wear her hijab? What's the difference? I completely respect these women (Catholic & Muslim alike) for sticking to their beliefs and wearing their "different" clothing even in the face of scrutiny.

Just to clairfy something, I am a born and bred American. Texan for that matter. And I say we should embrace the differences in all people. If it wasn't for the different cultures originally brought to this country by my ancestors who came to Virginia before my ancestors who come on the Mayflower and the ones who came here in the 1800's, we would not have our unique culture of today.

Some feel (wrongly) that the hijab is a symbol of terrorism. Its an image that western media doesn't really help to alleviate.
