get a couple of cans of Bengal roach spray, it is unscented. spray everwhere! on the baseboards , empty cupboads and closets spray around all edges and under shelves. spray outside each door too. the roaches will stay away for a long time.
keep your dishes washed and make sure you put the trash out every night.

NO, they will not cancel each other out. Go buy a bunch of "roach motels" from your local hardware store and put them around. The "cleaning" behind cupboards etc may help, BUT it would be better to SPRAY behind these areas to KILL the buggers... Try and keep ANY kind of food in a sealed container or in the fridge .. they come after food and if you leave leftovers lying around it's going to make things worse. Sometimes there is very little you can do if the whole apartment complex is infested because the will come from next door even after you have got your place cleaned up...

.. as far as your daughters dad .. it doesn't hurt to ask, but forget it if he refuses to help .. his loss in the long run..don't get bitter, it will not make your life any better. ... If you really can't handle the situation in the apartment then maybe think about moving..
