Your best option is this: GNER Standard Advance 3. It costs just £26.00 for a return from Scarborough to London, and can even be bought the day before travel. This is an amazing deal. Check out the link for all the conditions that apply.

As a general rule, the more specific you are about train times, the cheaper the options available to you. That is why you are asked for dates/times of travel. If by "flexible" you mean that you don't mind when you travel, then you can adapt to the operator's requirements for cheap fares. However, if by "flexible" you mean that you want to keep your traveI options open, then you might miss out on cheaper fares. The choice is yours.

You have to at least know the date you are travelling out regardless of what type and cost of ticket you buy. However, the greater the flexbility you want, the more expensive they become. They will allow you to return anytime within the 30 days of the outbound journey. The cheaper the tickets, the more inflexible they become - the cheapest tickets you have to book in advance and travel on specific trains. One thing you could do is just pcik up a single when you get to Scarborough and another single when you return from Kings Cross - it won't be the cheapest option but it will give the greatest flexibility.

GNER are currently going a 10% off promotion for fares bought online.

Also AVOID THE TRAINLINE - they have a service charge, if you get your ticket from any train company you just pay the face value

You could trainline.co.uk, where they will offer you the best price for all companies, including GNER and Virgin.
