Read the question. He did not say "half" of the Filipino, he said "a lot"! In Manila and larger cities, yes, there was some inter-marriages over the centuries between the mainly Malay Filipino (not exaclty native, because the original natives, called the Aeta, are only a few thousands in this country of 65 milliions) and Chinese traders who settled there almost a thousand years ago. Over the centuries, there was also some influx from other South-Asian regions: Muslims, Indian, Spanish, Arab and North American as well as Mestizos. While many Filipino have mixed ancestry, the proportion of Chinese blood in them is a lot less than 50%. Also, when you consider that the country is composed of about 7,000 islands, you should expect a lot of ethnic diveristy and some remote areas are still "pure blooded" Ifugao (Banaue), Bontoc (Central Cordillera), Mangyan (Mindoro), Pala'wan (highlands of south Palawan) and Negrito (eastern Luzon), among many other ethnic groups.

Many Filipinos have mixed ancestory . The filipinos are a malay race and have been trading with China for centuries . During the spanish rule of the Philippines it was almost non existant however due to their restrictions . In recent years though ,( the past 60 years approximately ) the Philippines has had an influx of peoples from other nations. Intermarriage between cultures has of course therefore resumed , not only with chinese however . Many filipinos have some type of mix or have mixed relatives .

Yes it is true, my friend. About 2% of the 90 million population. That's a lot, do the math! Approximately 1,800,000 of them!

The Chinese merchants have been trading with the Filipinos (they were not called Filipinos before the Spanish colonizers arrived) for hundreds of years. There were historical records of these trades and the most established Chinese merchants mostly settled in Manila where they thrived in an area called Binondo just outside the walled city of Manila in the Spanish era. And there are also records that they have settled in the Philippines long before the Spanish came in 1521.

They inter-married with the locals over the years hence, Fil-Chinese. Most Chinese migrants married only among themselves meaning they have full Chinese blood. But since their ancestors settled in the Philippines for hundred of years, they adapted the culture and the local language. But they consider themselves Fil-Chinese even though they don't have Filipino blood.

The Chinese community in the Philippines if I may add are among the richest and prosperous. They control almost half of the Philippines' businesses.

So the answer is yes, a lot of Filipinos are half-Chinese.

What many Filipinos may be forgetting is that China and the Philippines have a rich history of commerce even before Spain "discovered" the Philippine islands. In fact many people from China have migrated to the Philippines since the Spanish times and even up until now (especially from the Fujian province). Today a considerable number of Filipinos have Chinese blood, and just looking at everyday Filipino things you will notice a lot of Chinese influence. And although there is only few FIlipinos who can eat with chopsticks, most of their everyday lives are Chinese-influenced. For one, there are lots of Chinese words which are incorporated into the Filipino languages ("kuya" or "ate" for instance), there are a lot of practices that are Chinese in origin which are being widely-practiced in the Philippines , there is considerable Chinese influence in Filipino Cuisine ("pancit", "lumpia", etc.) and lots of things considered Filipino by normal everyday Filipinos are infact Chinese in origin. The similarities are many, varied and long-standing.
